One common mistake in agriculture is assuming that farmers only need tools to succeed. Farmers need more than just tools to succeed; they also need the right support and timely information to make better decisions on their farms.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Agriculture is one of Nigeria’s strongest pillars, providing jobs for millions and contributing significantly to the nation’s economy alongside crude oil. But for agriculture to reach its full potential, farmers must be empowered not only with inputs but also with knowledge, from choosing the right seeds and managing soil to protecting crops and accessing markets.
This is where the National Hotline for Agriculture (NHFA) steps in. NHFA is designed to be a farmer’s ultimate support system, offering up-to-date information and expert guidance that can boost yields, reduce losses, and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers.
The Bigger Picture
You might ask, “Why does a hotline matter in Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem?” The answer is simple: it bridges gaps that apps and platforms (mostly available on mobile phones) cannot.
Most digital solutions in agriculture today assume farmers have smartphones and reliable internet access. But millions of smallholder farmers still rely on basic feature phones. For them, downloading an app or streaming information online is out of reach and complicated.
However, with NHFA, a simple phone call enables any farmer to connect with our AI representative and receive practical, timely advice that helps them make informed decisions on their farms. Decisions, including but not limited to weather prediction, how to plant different seedlings, irrigation, and so much more.
A Tale of Two Farmers

Consider two cocoa farmers in Kaduna State. One has access to the National Hotline for Agriculture; the other does not.
The first farmer notices early signs of black pod disease, a common fungal infection that destroys cocoa pods. Unsure how to respond, she calls the NHFA. In her local language (Hausa), she explains the issue and immediately receives clear instructions: “Use one 50g sachet of Mackgold for a 15-litre knapsack sprayer to prevent black pod. Make sure to apply it evenly across your field.” With that guidance, she treats her farm the same day and protects her harvest. She also learns that she can purchase Mackgold and other inputs directly from Crop2Cash Marketplace, saving her time and giving her access to trusted products.
The second farmer, facing the same outbreak, doesn’t have NHFA. He turns to friends and neighbours, most of whom know little about how to treat the disease. By the time he figures out what might work, it’s too late. Black pod has already damaged much of his crop. Weeks of work and a season’s income are gone.
This is the difference NHFA makes: turning confusion into clarity, losses into protection, and connecting farmers directly to the tools they need to succeed.
What Makes It “Ultimate Support”
From the start, we knew the National Hotline for Agriculture would not just be a random helpline. Limiting it to the English Language would leave too many farmers behind, so we built it to speak in the languages they use every day, including Yoruba and Hausa, with more to come.
It doesn’t stop at language. The hotline is available 24/7 because farming challenges do not respect time. And unlike traditional call centers, the system remembers each farmer’s past interactions. That means every call picks up where the last one ended, creating personalised, consistent support over time and enhancing better farming, which in turn translates to healthier crops, healthier food, and ultimately healthier communities.
The Crop2Cash Ecosystem Connection
NHFA does not work as a standalone tool, as it is part of a bigger ecosystem we are building at Crop2Cash. Each of our solutions plays a role in helping farmers thrive, and together they function like a farmer-first operating system.
The USSD Wallet gives farmers access to secure savings, payments, and financial services on any phone, no internet required.
The Marketplace connects them to quality seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs at fair prices.
The Gather App helps farmer groups and cooperatives organise, track activities, and access opportunities more efficiently.
And the NHFA provides instant support and expert guidance whenever farmers need it most.
On their own, each solution removes a barrier. But combined, they create a complete support system that meets farmers where they are, simplifies, and provides solutions to their daily challenges.
Looking Ahead

The National Hotline for Agriculture is only the beginning. We plan to expand its coverage across more regions in Nigeria, reaching millions of farmers who still lack access to reliable support. As we grow, we’ll continue to integrate AI more deeply, making the hotline smarter, faster, and capable of handling even more complex farmer questions.
In the near future, NHFA would also serve as an emergency broadcast network, sending farmers real-time weather alerts, pest outbreak warnings, and government program updates directly to their phones. This type of support would be invaluable not only for smallholder farmers but also for women with kitchen gardens and youth just starting out in agribusiness. With timely information, they can protect their crops, plan better, and grow more confidently.
Our vision extends beyond Nigeria. The NHFA is designed as a model for inclusive agricultural support that can scale across Africa, ensuring that farmers everywhere have access to real-time advice.
Final Word
At Crop2Cash, we believe that every farmer deserves instant access to knowledge —knowledge that helps them farm smarter, reduce risks, and grow stronger businesses. The National Hotline for Agriculture is a commitment to ensure that no farmer is left without support, regardless of their location or the phone they use.
Through NHFA, we are contributing to the United Nations global goals on ending poverty and hunger (SDGs 1 & 2), improving health (SDG 3), advancing gender equality (SDG 5), and promoting climate-smart farming that protects land and water (SDGs 13 & 14).
If you’re an investor, innovator, or partner, we invite you to collaborate with us in scaling the NHFA’s impact. And if you know a farmer who could benefit from real-time agricultural support, share this with them, because every farmer deserves a direct line to knowledge.
